Automatically Characterizing Salience Using Readers' Feedback

چکیده

Salience is an important characteristic of information influencing users’ cognitive and emotional states. For example, salient parts of a document are those that readers will find moving or provoking. This article analyzes the main characteristics of salience and the different meanings of the concept in information retrieval and linguistics. It also presents a generic approach for identifying linguistically salient segments in a text using readers’ textual feedback. The method supports any kind of text and textual feedback. We evaluated the effectiveness of the method with a corpus of blog posts and readers’ comments. Our preliminary experiments show that the method has promising results with an fscore of 0.65. The method could also be used on 90% of commented posts which proves that it can be used on a large scale. Key-words: Salience, Information Retrieval, Feedback

Perceptual Salience and Reward Both Influence Feedback-Related Neural Activity Arising from Choice.

For day-to-day decisions, multiple factors influence our choice between alternatives. Two dimensions of decision making that substantially affect choice are the objective perceptual properties of the stimulus (e.g., salience) and its subjective value. Here we measure EEGs in human subjects to relate their feedback-evoked EEG responses to estimates of prediction error given a neurally derived ex...

Scanning probe microscopy based on reinforcement learning

Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has become an indispensable tool for characterizing the nanoscale. The core of its working principle involves raster-scanning a sharp tip in contact with a sample of interest, while maintaining a constant tip-sample interaction. This is achieved via standard proportional-integral (PI) feedback in virtually all industrial implementations. Here we explore 1) the po...

Predictably Non-Bayesian: Quantifying Salience Effects in Physician Learning About Drug Quality

E and survey-based research suggests that consumers often rely on their intuition and cognitive shortcuts to make decisions. Intuition and cognitive shortcuts can lead to suboptimal decisions and, especially in high-stakes decisions, to legitimate welfare concerns. In this paper, we propose an extension of a Bayesian learning model that allows us to quantify the impact of salience—the fact that...

Influence of Information Structure on the Salience of Opinions

We study the influence of information structure on the salience of subjective expressions for human readers. Using an online survey tool, we conducted an experiment in which we asked users to rate main and relative clauses that contained either a single positive or negative or a neutral adjective. The statistical analysis of the data shows that subjective expressions are more prominent in main ...
